I am interested in all things Russian.
I love Russian literature, Russian art, Russian history, Russian politics, Russia’s failed socialist, Communist experience. I love all of it.
Russia and Russians don’t scare me, but them, I’m not a Democrat.
Neither am I a Republican for Republicans fear Russians out of an inability to let go of the Cold War.
The Cold War ended about 30 years ago with the collapse of Soviet Union.
First the Berlin Wall came down; then modern Russia collapsed.
It is impossible to imagine Russia ever being again what it once was.
Those of us who grew up in the 1950’s and 1960’s will likely never see the day that Russia challenges us in any way as it did in the past.
Will Russia invade Europe?
I don’t think so.
Will it attempt to reunite the Soviet Union?
Not without failing miserably.
The big scare continues, however.
Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller’s investigation into President Trump’s Russia connection is the stuff of farce if you understand the imperatives of history.
His investigation is into an election that has passed with no consideration whatsoever being given about elections to come for this is the only thing that truly matters.
Elections to come are what we presumably need to protect from Russian intervention.
I am uncertain about what Russian intervention in our election got them the last time out.
Did they get their money’s worth?
I don’t think so.
What is Mueller looking for? Do we all really understand this?
Do any of us care?
When we are told by the leading Democratic talking heads that the nation needs to know what went on with Russia involvement I the election is this true?
Does the nation need to know or does the nation need to protect itself from future interventions of every kind in our national elections?
What is Mueller looking for?
He is hoping to find a legal reason to indict the president of the United States.
This is a big job. Nearly every reasonable politician in Washington says Mueller is just the right man, someone of integrity and persistence.
But is he?
Taking on a job like his, with the only major success indicting or aiding in the impeachment of the president, well, this is a big deal for Mueller.
He is working long and hard.
If only the Senate and House worked with such eagerness and diligence and respect for the law what a better nation we would be.
As for being afraid of Russia, I am not afraid of Russia.
I am afraid of the enemy within.
This enemy is pure evil.
I am not sure what all the fuss is about when it comes to Russia, that we need to fear Russia, that Russia is the enemy any more than China is supposed to be the enemy.
The enemy in America is ourselves, our political correctness, our hypocrisy, our own ignorance about democracy and what is clearly right and what is clearly wrong.
My family came from Russia to America in 1885. I know something about the Russian experience, from the cruel Russian winter to the harshness of life in Czarist Russia.
On top of all of this, I am a Jew — an American Jew with deep Russian roots.
Does this make me and my family the enemy?
I’m up on Russian history from the Great War and World War 2 when more millions of Russians died fighting evil than any of us Americans could ever comprehend.
I’ve read all of Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, Gogol, Bunin and Pushkin.
Does this make me a Russian sympathizer?
I applauded when President Reagan ramped up defense spending, creating a arms race with Russia that led Russia into spending itself into insolvency.
Putin doesn’t scare me. He’s just another Russian dictator out for himself and trying to be bigger than his reputation throughout the world.
His capacity to have an effect on my life is zero.
You see, whether or not Hillary Clinton won or Donald Trump won, we remain politically bankrupt, essentially a nation without direction and a nation without an understanding of who we are, where we came from and where we are heading or rather, where we ought to head.
Mueller’s investigation is a farce considered great justice being done by those who applaud what he is doing.
I am not sure what he is doing will lead to something worth a hill of beans.
Bottom line, if you are scared of Russia and not scared of North Korea, if you are worried that Israel is being unfair to Palestinians and Muslims across the globe who want Israel erased and Jews erased so they can have the Middle East for their own tribes, well, you are a bit touched.
The only thing we have to fear in America these days are ourselves.
